English, Maths and Science tuition in Standish

Small groups of no more than six, from Year 4 to GCSE, taught by qualified teachers at our own centre on Cross Street. We start with your child's confidence, because a confident child will have a go.

Most children who struggle aren't short of ability. They're scared of getting it wrong.

In a class of thirty, a child who doesn't understand can stay quiet for a long time. The gap gets wider, the subject starts to feel like something they're "no good at", and they stop trying the harder questions.

Our groups are never bigger than six. The tutor can see straight away where your child is stuck, and there is time to go back and fix it. Mistakes are part of the lesson, not something to hide. Once the fear goes, the effort comes back, and then the progress.

It works the other way too. Plenty of our students are already doing well and want the very top grades, and a small group gives them a teacher who knows exactly what examiners are looking for.

“So grateful to Richard for his support with our daughter and her maths tuition. Starting high school in September not really liking maths to getting an above target in her school report, much more confident and looking forward to her Friday afternoon lessons every week.”

Two career teachers, in their own centre

Richard taught secondary Maths for 26 years, 12 of them as a senior leader. Emma taught secondary English for 23 years and was Head of English in three local schools. She is also a qualified dyslexia specialist and assessor.

Richard started Top Grades in 2019 in a parish hall on Saturday mornings. Two years later it moved into its own centre in Standish with three classrooms and a team of qualified tutors.

How your child starts

  1. Get in touch

Call, email or fill in the form. Tell us your child's year, subject and what's worrying you. If you'd both like to look round first, we'll book a tour.

  2. A free assessment lesson

A relaxed hour with their tutor to find their strengths and the areas to work on. It isn't a test, and there are no fees until after it.

  3. A plan and the right group

We go through the assessment with you, use anything school has told you, and agree the best group. Then you get regular feedback on how they're getting on.

“Emma & Richard are phenomenal. Both my daughters attend classes and it's not just their grades which have improved considerably over the past 12 months or lessons, but also their confidence has soared too. Highly recommended.”

Fees, attendance and other questions

Start with a free assessment lesson

Exams don't move, and gaps are easier to close the earlier we find them. Your child comes in for an hour, meets their tutor and does some relaxed work so we can see where they are. No fees are due until after it.
