Tuition Maths

Maths tuition for children who are scared of getting it wrong

Confidence is the key to getting better at Maths. Lots of children stop trying a question because they are afraid of being wrong. In our lessons a mistake is something to learn from, and we teach why a method works, not tricks to remember.

Maths tuition at each stage

KS2 Maths

Years 4 to 6

Strong foundations in number, the four operations, fractions, decimals, percentages, ratio, measures, geometry and statistics.

We build understanding and problem-solving, fill gaps from earlier years, back up what is being taught at school and help with the move to secondary.

KS3 Maths

Years 7 to 9

Number, algebra, ratio and proportion, geometry, probability and statistics, with an eye on what GCSE will ask.

We find and fix gaps, build reasoning and problem-solving, and can support whatever topic your child is doing at school right now.

GCSE Maths, Foundation and Higher

Years 10 and 11

Classes are organised by tier and target grade, so students are closely matched. Lessons build on each student’s strengths and work on the topics they find hardest.

As exams get closer, students do targeted practice questions and past-paper work. We show them where the marks are, the question types that keep coming up, and how to have a go at a problem they have not seen before.

We teach Edexcel, AQA and OCR GCSE Maths and adapt to your child’s specification.

How a Maths lesson works

Every student starts with an assessment lesson, where the tutor finds their strengths and the areas to work on.

  • Students work on specific topics and are checked and supported throughout the hour.
  • Once a topic is secure, they apply it to different question types before moving on.
  • If school flags a topic, or your child is stuck on something in class, we change the plan to cover it.
Richard, founder and Maths tutor

Maths is led by Richard, who founded Top Grades after 26 years as a secondary Maths teacher, 12 of them as a senior leader. His favourite part of the job is the moment the penny drops.

Mrs Green, Year 7 parent

“Highly recommend, Richard was quickly able to identify the areas my daughter needed to focus on and being able to concentrate on those in small group sessions was just what she needed.”

Find out where your child is in Maths

Your child comes in for an hour, meets their tutor and does some relaxed work so we can see where they are. No fees are due until after it, and you decide afterwards whether to carry on.
