TOP GRADESEDUCATION

From a parish hall on Saturday mornings to a centre of our own

Richard started Top Grades in 2019, renting a room in a local parish hall on Saturday mornings. Two years later it had grown enough to open its own tuition centre in Standish, with three classrooms and a growing team of tutors.

Before running Top Grades full time, Richard spent 26 years as a secondary school Maths teacher, including 12 years as a senior leader.

He teaches for understanding rather than tricks and rules. When students understand why a method works, they remember it, and they can use it on problems they haven't seen before.

Confidence matters just as much. One of his first jobs with a new student is showing them that mistakes are part of learning. The comment he hears most from parents is how much their child's confidence in Maths has grown.

“It's the best part of the job: the look on a child's face when they realise they can do something they struggled with in school.”

Emma has 23 years' experience as a secondary school English teacher, and was Head of English in three local schools.

With teaching and examining experience, she supports GCSE students in English Language and English Literature, including their set texts, and she especially enjoys bringing Shakespeare's characters, language and themes to life.

She is also a specialist dyslexia teacher, qualified to carry out full diagnostic dyslexia assessments, and uses multi-sensory teaching for children who find reading and writing hard.

“Engaging children with a love of reading and seeing them immerse themselves in a story or character is one of the great joys of my job.”

Part of Standish

In 2024 we were an associate sponsor of the Wigan 10K and Family Mile for Joining Jack, the charity supporting families living with Duchenne muscular dystrophy and funding research into treatments. Working with some remarkable young men living with DMD made it an easy choice.

What parents say about the team

“Emma & Richard are phenomenal. Both my daughters attend classes and it's not just their grades which have improved considerably over the past 12 months or lessons, but also their confidence has soared too. Highly recommended.”

Emily Roberts, Parent

“Our son attained Grade A results in the subjects he was provided support with from Top Grades. They tailored his lessons to ensure any areas of weakness were quickly addressed. Cannot recommend Top Grades enough they are second to none in their standards of teaching.”

Mrs Clarke, Year 11 parent

“So glad we chose Top Grades for Maths Tuition! Richard's Maths classes most certainly aided in a fabulous GCSE result for my son! Thank you so much Richard & Emma for going above and beyond. x”
